Yemeni coffee house opens in Garden City

3 min read

A developed love of coffee led Fares Abdulmalek to open Garden City’s newest café.

The Dearborn native spent time years ago working for Starbucks and developed a love for the drink. Now, Abdulmalek serves up Middle Eastern coffee and other drinks at his newest business.

That passion has led to the opening of Finjan Café at 28251 Ford Road in Garden City. The work to renovate the space took months: Abdulmalek said he’s had the “coming soon” sign up for many months before opening the doors in early August.

Ever since he discovered Yemeni coffee when visiting Yemen several years ago, he said he knew he had to open his own shop selling the coveted drink.

When looking for a space to open, he decided to go west of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, communities with traditionally high numbers of residents with Middle Eastern heritage. Looking to attract guests from other parts of metro Detroit, he found the space in the small strip mall on Ford Road between Inkster and Middlebelt in Garden City.
