Since opening in October, Up Scale has been a buzzy South Alamo spot for its seafood and steak menu as well as providing a chic backdrop for foodie Instagram photos. Now a global source is buying in to the glam.
Interior Design Magazine, an international authority for industry news, highlighted the work of Crystal Sinclair in reupping the 137-year-old building at the heart of the Southtown district to become the latest culinary venture for restaurateurs Houston and Emily Carpenter.
The San Antonio restaurant holds a prominent spot on the publication’s website as of this write as a “Hot Spot” bookended by projects like an immersive experience at a building in Shenzen, China and Microsoft’s Australia headquarters. Interior Design calls Up Scale “chic” with a “glamorous atmosphere.”
“The owners love pink and their first restaurant also has a strong pink presence,” Sinclair says in the Interior Design feature. “Then we brought in a deep green, a throwback to the Art Deco era, and bright reds for a strong pop.”

Sinclair, who is from San Antonio and is now based out of New York, says she was familiar with the Southtown building prior to being tapped by the Carpenters and could not turn down the opportunity to work on the transformation.
The Carpenters also own Little Em’s Oyster Bar, an intimate pop of pastel also on South Alamo that opened a year ago. The couple previously described Up Scale as a complementing their first business with a “sexy” vibe.
Up Scale features blush mid-century modern banquette seating, sleek black terrazzo floors, and a polyhedral chandelier that Sinclair describes as a “vintage glam throwback of glimmering goodness.”

The restaurant is open Wednesday through Saturday.

“We put a great deal of time and effort working with Crystal Sinclair Designs with the goal of delivering a space that lives up to the name,” he tells MySA. “Her knowledge and skill of interior design paired with her coast-to-coast resume definitely gave Up Scale the authentic edge we’re so proud of.”
Up Scale is located at 1024 S Alamo Street. Hours are 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
